Alfie

What's it all about, Alfie? These are the words to the song which begins and ends this remake of the 1966 romantic comedy of the same name, starring Michael Caine. This updated version features Jude Law as the charismatic and dashing womanizer, romancing at least five beautiful women in New York City. Jude gives a remarkable performance of a man who has misgivings and reexamines his relationship with these women. Rated "R" for some nudity, sexual content, and drug use. This film, like the main character, is charming, suave, well-dressed, funny, and a little sad.

Alien gives it 2 ½ "Hey, Jude" stars out of 4.

Comments:
This is a remake of a 1960s classic. This time, New York limo driver Alfie Elkins has a problem: too many, too physical, relationships with attractive women. Is this a problem? Well, a lot of guys who have not scored so well with the ladies would like to think so. This, and a little female topography, is the appeal of the movie for the average guy. It’s a morality tale—insensitive womanizers end up sad and lonely. We can darn well hope so anyway. Women may perhaps take joy in the cad’s comeuppance, or at another level just think Jude Law is really hot!

The old Michael Caine movie still defines “what’s it all about.” Two and a half commitment-shy stars.
