The Prestige

If Batman fought Wolverine, who would win?

Set in Victorian England, Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman play young ambitious magicians who become murderously competitive. Michael Caine is the mentor and deviser of the big illusions. Scarlett Johansson is cast in the role of the pretty assistant, of course. Alien enjoyed most of this magic movie more than “The Illusionist” because it uses more believable tricks until it took an unorthodox H.G. Wellsian turn near the end. Like most magic acts, this film isn’t honest as it cheats and lies in order to entertain the audience. Alien was also annoyed by the background music which drowned out the dialogue at times.

Alien gives it 2 ½ “double blind obsession” stars out of 4.

Comments:
Robert Angier played by (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden played by (Christian Bale) begin as fellow magians, but after a freak accident the two become fierce competitors. Robert who was greatly impacted accidently doesn't feel it was an accident and blames his competitor Alfred. The back drop in this movie takes place during the turn of the century in London when live magic was a crown pleaser. Both magian's set off to push the magicial limits but also trying to sabotage the other. Alfred has been keeping a secret for many years regarding the ultimate magic trick, which he eventually performs. Robert sees this trick performed by Alfred and sets off to figure it out. While I thought the acting was good, the movie was a little choppy and hard to follow at times. There also seemed to be some audio issues in the theater making it difficult to hear at times. I still would have liked to see more magic tricks. I thought the movie was entertaining and most would enjoy.
I give it "2" poor little yellow canaries out of 4.
