House of Spoils

A talented sous chef (Adriana DeBose) quits her job at a high end fine dining establishment to open her own restaurant upstate in a remote quaint old estate. This new place has been abandoned for quite a bit & needs lots of clean up. She begins to hear funny noises on the property. She is battling kitchen chaos: bug infestations & spoiling foods. Is the place cursed & haunted by a supernatural presence or is she hallucinating? Something seems to sabotage her initial test runs. Her investors are threatening to pull out. She begins to have self doubts about her new business. She learns from a local that her place used to be own by a lady thought to be a witch who held mystical ceremonies with her coven there. Then, she finds a secret garden that seems to turn things around for her. On the night of her restaurant’s grand opening things get really weird. Will her business become successful? Or will she succumb to some mysterious presence? This one is more eerie than scary. The tasty treats for the eye seem to be overshadowed by more disgusting images. The film seems to be driven more by certain scenes presented than the murky plot. However, I did like DeBose’s performance. This one was never destined to play at theaters but check it out at one of those streaming services.

Alien gives it 2 “cauldron boil & bubble” stars out of 4.
