Idlewild
It’s rap/hip-hop in a 1930’s jive joint full of gangsters and moonshine. Childhood buddies grow up in Idlewild, Georgia. They perform at a local speakeasy night club, but their lives change when an ambitious gangster makes his move. The movie has some of the most stunning creative effects which create a feast for the eyes. The main flaw of the film is it can’t make up its mind what it wants to be… it’s part musical, part animation, part gangster movie, and part love story… and it jumps back and forth between them. The film features Andre Benjamin, Big Boi, Terrence Howard, Paula Patton, Ben Vereen, and Ving Rhames. The best musical number plays during the closing credits.
Alien gives it 2 ½ “highly stylized sequences” stars out of 4.
