Green Book

Two complete opposites on a long road trip form a strong bond & a long-lasting friendship in this wonderful drama/comedy based on a true story. In 1962, Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) is a cultured, refined, & proper black concert pianist who needs a driver & protector for his concert tour through the Deep South. Tony Vallelonga aka Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), is a shady, uncouth, & uncultured laid-off Italian-American bouncer that is hired for the trip. Mortensen expertly plays his role as a chatty brash blue-collared guy from the Bronx, but he is charming & lovable in his own way. Linda Cardellini plays Tony’s loving wife.  The plot skillfully illustrates the injustices of prejudice & rascism in America at the time. The “green book” references the travel guide book for Negroes as to what establishments “their kind” would be welcomed into. During their 2 month tour, these two grow to know & understand each other. From different worlds, these two build a life-long friendship & special bond. This is a terrific emotionally satisfying film that could easily be overlooked at the box office. Photos of the real characters play at the end.

Alien gives it 3½ “jade stone” stars out of 4.
