The Way Back
A former star basketball player Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) who turned down a scholarship to a perennial power house college basketball program & now an adult blue collar construction worker struggling with alcoholism, is offered a head coaching position at his alma mater. As Jack replaces booze with basketball, this “Bad News Bears” B-ball team begins to win despite their disadvantage & Jack is forced to face his demons. Affleck, being a former person with a drinking problem who jeopardized his professional & personal life, is perfect to play this role & is amazing. This sports drama about redemption, motivation, strategy, & looking forward is exciting, emotional, & even a little funny at times, but never preachy. You will be rooting for him & the team.
ps. Don’t confuse this title with the 2013 film “The Way, Way Back” about a young boy’s summer experience at a water park.
Alien gives it 3½ “chip on your shoulder” stars out of 4.
