The Greatest Beer Run Ever
In 1967, a New York City neighborhood is devastated by their own Vietnam War casualties. A bartender’s comment to a bunch of drinking buddies triggers one guy’s remarkable journey to the war zone. Based by true events, this is a biographical war action comedy drama. John “Chickie” Donahue (Zac Efron) is a slacker who naively volunteers to deliver beer to some of his old buddies now serving their country in South Vietnam to show them his support in this unpopular war. There, he finally experiences the realities of this war. Efron is terrific as that bumbling guy who miraculously fulfills his mission without making any real plans. What starts out as a funny lighthearted experience turns rather serious & touching on this wild journey. Bill Murray plays a bartender & Russel Crowe is war correspondent photographer. This is an entertaining, improbable, but true, story about an ordinary guy from the neighbor with a big heart but maybe not so much smarts. At the films end, there is a summary text & photos of the real characters protested.
Alien gives it 3 “the civilian tourist” stars out of 4.
