Soul Plane

"Soul Plane" is to airlines and movies as "Soul Train" is to music and television. The premise is an urban youth wins a multimillion dollar lawsuit after being wronged by an airline and sets off to build a better airline from his point of view. He calls it N.W.A. (use your imagination). It is not a great film, but it is not too bad either. Rated "R" for rude language, racy sexual content, and raunchiness. If urban humor is your thing, you may enjoy this movie.

Shrek 2

I must be one of the few individuals left on this planet who hasn't seen the original "Shrek"... so I can't say whether this one is any better or worse. But I can say "Shrek 2" is outrageously hilarious. It makes fun of Sleeping Beauty, Red Riding Hood, Spiderman, and "From Here To Eternity"... and that's just in the first 5 minutes. It is "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" while poking fun at Disney, L.A., fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and other famous movies. The gags come so fast and furious that you may still be laughing as another one sneaks past you. I can't tell you any more and give away the fun. You got to go see it for yourself. Be sure to sit through the credits for the final scene.

My 3-year-old theater mate liked it and wanted to see it again tomorrow. I agree. It is one to be enjoyed again and again.

PS. The perfect movie treat for this show is the new Shrek M&M's. They come in Shrek colors and are ogre-sized. Check it out.

Troy

Let's get the important questions answered first. Brad Pitt, as Achilles, is dressed in a leather mini skirt and is naked at least 3 times in "Troy". Also, Orlando Bloom costars as Paris, Prince of Troy, who steals Helen away from the King of Sparta.

Now, how much Greek history and literature do you remember from school? ...and those long Greek names that you can't pronounce. Here is your chance for a refresher course.

"Troy" is the story of two warriors, Achilles and Hector, battling for their people, their land, and their honor. Inspired by Homer's Iliad, this epic movie shows how the Greeks and Trojans lived, fought, and died. You feel like you have journeyed back in time to the city of Troy. The battle scenes are spectacular. The realistic Trojan Horse is impressive. The movie has a sense of sadness and doesn't glorify this war.

To make a better movie tale, a bit of literary license is used to slightly alter this literary classic.

Roar, Lions of the Kalahari

This IMAX film shows how life struggles to exist around the watering hole. The old lion who dominates the area is challenged by a younger lion. Watch how lions hunt and stalk their prey. See how lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras, and springboks interact in the Kalahari. This entertaining film is beautifully shot.

Van Helsing

If horror is your genre, you got to see “Van Helsing”. It is a heart-throbbing thrill ride. Universal Pictures has masterfully reinvented their classic movie monsters. Back are Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein’s Monster along with some surprises, such as the almost supersonic Brides of Dracula. Great villains make movies great and in this one, Dracula is mesmerizing. To battle these incredible monsters are two outstanding heroes to match. It is ironic that Kate Beckinsale (Underworld) finds herself again in the midst of vampires and werewolves and Hugh Jackman (X-Men) fights with sharp metallic blades at his finger tips.

It’s an action/adventure/horror tale with touches of Indiana Jones, James Bond, Alien, Star Wars, Anastasia, and Alice in Wonderland all in the mix. The special effects are spectacular, but remember to bring your ear plugs. You got to love a good horror story.

When you get off this Universal thrill ride, you’ll be running back to get in line again.

New York Minute

"New York Minute" stars the Olsen twins. You either love them or hate them. It's "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" times two in Mary Kate and Ashley's first theatrical debut. Enough said. Only fans need to read on.

It's the odd couple on the loose in the Big Apple roaming from Manhattan to Chinatown to Harlem in a limo, in a taxi, on the subway, on a bike, and through the sewers being chased by a truant officer and a limo driver. This madcap caper involves a computer chip, a lost day planner, an ugly dog, two cute guys (of course), and a fashion show (of course again) in the House of Bling. True fans know that 17-year-olds who own their own production company can make movies in whatever locales they wish, especially if they want to vacation there or plan to attend college there in the fall.

Alien gives it 2 dual stars out of 4 for those closet fans out there...

But Alien's 11-year-old female carbon-based-unit (the Olsen twins' target audience) abductee gives it 4 stars out of 4 and thinks it's the best Olsen twin movie yet.
